so janelle monae’s new music video has been making the rounds on tumblr recently. which is great since i think everyone should listen to her and see how amazing she is.

however, i’ve also seen a bit of discussion about the song revealing aspects of her sexuality. if that is the case, then boy howdy because the music industry definitely needs more positive lgbt role models as driven and amazing as she is.

even more so though is that if that is what the song is about, she addresses it in the most striking and fantastic way possible. how even if her sexuality or identity isn’t heteronormative, she doesn’t want to be so simplified as to having another label to replace it. if anything, she rejects the idea in place just being true to herself and asking to exist as such.

which wouldn’t that be a wonderful thing? just having to be true to yourself rather than living up to the expectations and convictions of others?
